Preparation for Zero Waste Week 2017 – My Bin Audit

I’m delighted to be a Zero Waste Week Ambassador once again and thoroughly looking forward to next week. Zero Waste Week runs from the 4th to the 8th of September and there’s still plenty of time to sign up and make your pledge here. Pledges can be anything from making a reusable cup your new habit to asking for your takeaway in your own containers. When you sign up, you’ll also receive a free eBook.

Like last year, I’ll be saving our landfill rubbish (except for cat litter!) in a jar for the week, so that I can see just how much rubbish we’ve accumulated over the week and what the main culprits are. I’ve already been keeping an eye on our rubbish as part of the bin audit that Rachelle Strauss (organiser of Zero Waste Week) has requested from followers. We use old cereal bags to line our kitchen bin and throw away a full one of these each week. Given that I could probably fit two of them inside a carrier bag, this means I’m sticking to my New Year’s Resolution of keeping our kitchen waste to the equivalent of a carrier bag of rubbish per fortnight.

The contents of our bin usually amount to dishwasher tablet wrappers, cucumber wrappers, the unrecyclable components of our son’s medication, the odd frozen pizza wrapper, pasta packaging, cheese packaging, beer bottle caps, a bit of food waste from the children’s plates and some random plastic bits and bobs (such as broken charger cables or broken bits from party bag toys we’ve been unable to refuse). We’ll be making an extra special effort during Zero Waste Week to reduce our waste even further and I’ll be interested to see at the end of the week what’s in our jar.

Why not sign up to Zero Waste Week and join us for five days? You can find out more about the Zero Waste Week ambassadors and read the wide range of blogs they write here. If you’ve already signed up, share your pledge in the comments. I’d love to hear it.

  1. This is ‘Spot-On’ and we would also like everyone to consider also participating in the global OneLessStraw Campaign as well. It is easy to go without using a single use plastic straw for 30-day and we encourage everyone to sign the pledge and to suggest that their favorite restaurant also participates by pledging to only hand out straws upon request.

  2. I’m on day 2 of saving my rubbish to audit – it is mounting up on the kitchen surface and because it is there I can see how much it is! I’m looking forward to attempting 5 days of no rubbish! Best of luck!

    • Thanks. Good luck to you too. There’s something about seeing it all there in front of you that makes a huge impact. The opposite of ‘out of sight, out of mind’! I always say, if everyone had their own individual landfill just outside their house, they’d soon do something about their waste. Enjoy Zero Waste Week! 🙂
